Physics Society learn about ‘playing ping pong with electrons’

On Thursday 25th January fifty students from The Windsor Boys’ School and Charters School, Ascot were welcomed by an experimental researcher from Cambridge.

Professor Ford made a breakthrough in quantum mechanics in 2011, when he was able to move electrons with waves and called this ‘Playing ping pong with electrons.’  He showed that being able to control the movement of electrons was very hard and required many steps - the most researched one seemed to be that, of confining electrons to a very small space so that, they wouldn’t travel elsewhere. We were then introduced to some of the practical applications of his research.  Quantum computing being the main application is heavily explored by technology companies such as Google and IBM.

The talk was well received and many students stayed behind to ask further questions.
